Weekly Update - 22 August 2016
Good evening Selby,
Hopefully everyone has had a chance to get back to school, meet their teachers and adjust schedules. This is a week of serious transition going from the summer back to the rigors and schedules of school. As you are filling out the mass paperwork and writing all those checks for school fees, please take a moment to read through this week’s updates.
Wednesday
Band Practice - 7:00pm
Thursday
Zumba - 6:30pm to 7:30pm
Ladies Night - 7:30pm
Coming up…
- Special Meeting of the Community Association - 29 August
There will be a special meeting of the Selby community association on 29 August at 7:30pm at the Selby Community Center. This meeting will to vote on amendments to the bylaws and constitution. We would like to add a position and subtract a position. You must be present to vote and you must be a property holder.
- 2nd Annual Howl-At-The-Moon - 17 September
Our 2nd Annual Howl-At-The-Moon will be on 17 September from 5:30pm to 10:00pm. This is our last hoorah as we say goodbye to summer under the Harvest Moon. The Harvest Moon is the full moon closest to the autumnal equinox. Farmers long ago would use the light of the full moon to harvest the last of the summer crops. Our own Selby band, The Thursdays, will be playing and everyone is welcome to bring down their coolers and corn hole and get ready for the colder days to follow. There is a Sign Up Genius set up, but you may also email SelbyBay@gmail.com with your donation.

- SCA Elections - 18 September
The elections of a new Selby Community Association will be held on 18 September. The meeting will begin at 2:00pm and voting will follow with a light lunch buffet for voters. Keep a look out for the election edition of the Bay Winds.
- Community Yard Sale - 24 September
Selby will be hosting a community yard sale on 24 September. If you would like to participate, then please email your address by 4 September to SelbyBay@gmail.com. Please include a brief item description ~ i.e. kids toys, clothes, furniture, etc. If you have already sent in your address, then please email again with item descriptions. This information may help yard salers. A map will be put together so that folks know where to look. It is strongly encouraged that those having yard sales make a copy of this map to hand out at their yard sales as well. Additionally, if your kids would like to set up stands like lemonade or coffee and donuts, then please let me know and I’ll put that on the map too! This is a great opportunity for them to make a little cash and yard saling is hard work!
ANNOUNCEMENTS
- It is the beginning of school. There will be kids standing on the side of our streets without sidewalks and kids crossing the roads. School is exciting and the minute that bus stops, the kids are rushing to it (except for the high schoolers). PLEASE…PLEASE…PLEASE…slow down when driving through community streets. Also, set down that cell phone. A child’s life is not worth that text AND it is illegal and a primary offense! Lastly, it is illegal to pass a school bus. Keep an eye out and when those lights are flashing…you are stopping! Scooting around the back corner of the bus to drive up a street counts too. Stay put and let the kids board the bus safely.
Have an excellent week and a great start to this school year!!

We are gearing up for our 2nd annual Howl-At-The-Moon Beach Party! A sign-up genius will be posted soon so look out for that. If there is anything that anyone would like to contribute, then please email SelbyBay@gmail.com. Last year we had an amazing impromptu show from some folks with fire and hoops. If anyone is friends with them, then please email the address as well. Last year was really good! Let’s make this year better!!
18 September
Selby Community Association Election Day
We’ll be going through our election process again this year. More information will be coming out real soon. Stay tuned for that!
24 September
Community Yard Sale
We’ll be having a community yard sale on 24 September. If you know that you will be having a yard sale that day and you live in Selby-On-The-Bay, then please email SelbyBay@gmail.com with your address. A map will be made of all yard sale addresses. I highly recommend making copies to give out to yard sale folks as they come around so they know who to visit. If anyone would like to do some advertising, then that would be helpful. Please have all addresses in no later than 4 September. Thanks!
Have a great last week of summer for our teachers and last 2 weeks for the kiddos!

Selby Weekly - 25 July 2016
Good Monday Morning Selby!
Today is going to be a scorcher from what I’m hearing. This heat is no joke. There are heat advisories everywhere! We are expecting heat indexes of 105 to 110! Please be careful. Limit outside physical activity. You can skip just one day of jogging. It’s okay. Check on your elderly neighbors and those with very young children and make sure they have working AC. Get those fuzzy friends indoors! And whatever you do…NEVER LEAVE ANY LIVING CREATURE IN A HOT CAR! Keep them home. They are happy there! If your pets must be outside (even for a little while), then make sure they have fresh, clean, cool water to drink. Running fans and pulling down the blinds in your home can help keep your house cool and save the AC and electricity. Cooling centers are open around the county. Our local ones ~ Edgewater Library, Annapolis Library and the Southern District police station on Stepney’s Lane. Those are the closest to us. They have AC, water and restrooms. They do not provide medical services and do not accommodate animals. Now on to the weekly update.

** Community Yard Sale **
We’ll be scheduling a community yard sale in September. If you haven’t participated in past community yard sales, then this is how it goes. Everyone has a yard sale on the same day. Maps are posted around showing all the houses that are having yard sales. The one year that I had a yard sale, I made copies of the map and addresses and gave them out at my yard sale. Stay tuned for more details. Until then, start looking for stuff to sell!!

** Mayo Peninsula Planning and Project Update **
The Mayo Peninsula Planning and Project Update Meeting is tomorrow, Tuesday, 26 July 2016 from 7:00pm to 8:30pm at Mayo Elementary School. This is a great time to hear what’s going on directly from County Executive Steve Schuh and it’s also a great opportunity to voice concerns and ask questions. Everyone is urged to come!!

**Jellyfish **
The jellies are out and about if you haven’t noticed. I know folks in my own home are getting stung regularly. In our years here in Selby we have tried many things to ease the pain from a jellyfish sting from meat tenderizer to baking soda paste to scrubbing with sand. The two tried and true methods (and there may be more and some things work differently for different people) so far are vinegar or hand sanitizer. Try them out the next time you lose to a jellyfish!

** Beach Bulletin Board **
The beach bulletin board has been updated and I’m going to attempt to keep it up. I think it’s a great way to communicate with neighbors in a non-digital kind of way. It’s also a great way to get out of the house in the cooler evenings with family. Try taking a walk to the beach - get updated on community news AND the clubhouse IS a Pokestop! I do ask that folks DO NOT open the front of the bulletin board and add personal items. The bulletin board is for community news only! We are looking into corking the back for personal and business ads.

Selby has a YouTube channel! YouTube is HUGE right now and I think it’s a fun way to get some messages to folks. Search “Selby Bay” in YouTube, find our channel and subscribe! We have 2 videos with more to come!

Weekend Winter Storm Update
Good morning Selby!
As we recover from a little taste of what we are expecting this weekend, here is a little update.
First, thank you to Jay Scott for the road conditions report!! It is incredibly helpful to know what the roads are like before we venture out. You'll definitely be needed to let us know how things are going as you're plowing this weekend! Please safely stay in touch.
As you may have expected, our 2nd Annual Chili Cook-Off will be postponed until the following weekend, 30 January from 4pm to 6pm. Please keep signing up!!!! This gives everyone additional time to sign up so we can plan our space!!
We have a large nor'easter heading our way this weekend with a potential of 1-2 feet of snow. We are currently under a Blizzard Watch meaning that along with heavy bands of snow, we will be expecting very high winds. We may even have some thundersnow which is too cool! These conditions are extremely dangerous. I encourage everyone to prepare now so that when the storm arrives, folks are not jumping on the roads. Please leave the roads open to the emergency crews, plows and utility companies.
Now is the time to check snow blowers, generators and get salt and shovels. Top off the gas in your vehicles and make sure you have plenty of window washing fluid. Please check on elderly neighbors and neighbors with young children to make sure that have prescriptions, supplies, heat, food and such for the weekend. Please bring in animals ~ cats and dogs. Animals should NOT have to be outside during this storm. Check batteries for flashlights and bring up any firewood that you may need. The stores are emptying quick!
With so much snow on the way, there will be a mass digging out when everything is said and done on Sunday. PLEASE help out your neighbors. This is a great opportunity for our Selby youth to earn a few bucks. I will post a picture of two kids walking with shovels in the snow. Please post all comments for either wanting to be shoveled out OR wanting to shovel someone out. If you are reading this message on a forum other than Facebook, then please email SelbyBay@gmail.com and you will be added to the Facebook thread for those looking for snow removal. If we keep everyone on one thread, then it will be easier to match everyone up and folks can contact each other as they see fit.
I believe that is it. I will be posting weather reports regularly on Facebook as they come in with any new information. Hang in there and I guess we'll have winter after all!
